A Brief Account The Devastation of the Indies written by Bartolome De Las Casas is a graphic description of vile acts perpetrated by the Spanish Christians Instead of spreading the word of Christ they took advantage of the American indigenous population for their riches lands and slaves Bartolome De Las Casas began his journey as an educated soldier and a chaplain After witnessing the massacres with his own eyes he evolved into a passionate defender of Indian rights In 1552 without seeking clearance of the Spanish Inquisition he published The Devastation of the Indies in Spanish but in very short time the book was translated into multiple languages and was spread to all the corners of the discovered world exposing the horrific truth about what the Spanish nobles undertook to rob the native population of the new found landUpon arrival to the newly discovered land the Spanish explorers otherwise known as conquistadors were thought of as gods by the Indians As described by Batholome Indian people welcomed the new visitors with open arms their most precious possessions ready to be delivered as gifts Besides the discovery of the new lands the first conquistadors had big plans to convert the indigenous population to Christianity However all the riches poisoned their pure intentions and God was no longer the priority With greed of a wild animal they started torturing and killing the villagers for more and more gold Conquistadors then became known as encomendos and these wealthy owners of many slaves and large plantations would find new and crueler ways of depriving the Indian populations for their own interests of gold and products that could be sold overseas It is these encomendos that Las Casas encountered in the new found land Bartolome De Las Casas was a son of a wealthy merchant farther who permitted him to become an educated man instead of following the footsteps of the past generations of traders In the first couple of
