Written by Edward Said Covering Islam is a 1981 geopolitical book that addresses the medias depiction of the Muslim world and how it shapes our opinion towards the region More precisely Said focuses on the medias role in perpetuating the fear of Islam as well as the actors backing them and their ulterior motives He splits his attack into four stages the medias unfair characterization of Islam the contributory factors the scholars lack of regional expertise and the powerful role that the media plays in defining US policy When I first observed the book I noticed on the cover like all other readers the journalist taking pictures of the Arabic man possibly a Taliban fighter As I critically reviewed Saids argument I wondered how I came to classify the man as such From the clothes he wore and the weapon he held I inferred he was an Arab because thats what I have to come to think Arabic men look like thats what I have seen in magazines newspapers and movies so it must be true Furthermore if the same man was wearing a suit and holding a briefcase instead I would think of him as educated civilized and approachable The man in the picture however is holding an AK-47 so he must be hostile militant radical and irrational For decades the media has associated or even promoted the latter image with the region Although I prematurely characterized the man Said would argue that Im an improvement from the media and the experts because I at very least did what they failed to do which is to differentiate religion from race whereas they would simply classify the man as an Islamist For decades the media has used the terms Muslim Islamist and militant interchangeably as if they are one and the same and he believes this to be one of the fundamental problems the world currently faces pg xiv With the advances in technology westerners
