After hearing that that we would be watching an Italian film I must admit I did not exactly have high-hopes for it Although I was very pleasantly surprised by Il Postino The movie starts out a bit dawdling with the main character Mario getting hired as a postman for the famous poet in exile Pablo Neruda The first thing that I noticed was the sublime music that was played throughout the film The main song used was very Romanesque It forced you into picturing yourself sitting at an Italian caf eating spaghetti In fact the composer Luis Enriquez Bacalov received an Academy Award for Best MusicSet in about 1950 the film is about a Chilean communist and poet Pablo Neruda who was exiled from his country to a small Italian island Pablo was very famous for his romantic poetry Mario Ruoppolo is a local island fisherman who is dissatisfied with his current job and is hired as an ephemeral postman for Don Pablo Everyday Mario delivers Pablos agglomeration of fan mail to his reclusive home where Pablo and his wife live Meanwhile Mario falls in love with another local named Beatrice Since women seem to adore Pablos romantic poetry Mario seeks Pablos help Pablo and Mario start to become friends after bonding everyday so Pablo teaches Mario about how to write poetry Mario is too apprehensive to talk to Beatrice himself so he writes her poems to better profess his love for her Against her aunts will Beatrice falls in love with Mario Beatrices aunt is crestfallen about this because she feels that Marios poetry is inappropriate After nights of meeting up and sneaking out Mario and Beatrice decide that they want to get married and have Pablo as their witness Even though we are aware that Pablo is a communist it does not affect how we as the audience feel about Pablo Pablo feels like such a benevolent and amiable person Since Pablo is
