Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale are the two main protagonists of thenovel The Scarlet Letter Hester stands out the most becauseeverybody in town knew her as an adulterer In public Hester is thebearer of the scarlet letter Nonetheless the suspense of the novelrevolves around Arthur and his private mark of adultery Throughout thenovel the author consistently compares nature such as the rosebush theforest the wild un-wanted weeds and sunlight to characters Each formof nature describes certain aspects within the novelOn one side of the portal and rooted almost at the threshold was awild rose-bush covered in this month of June with its delicate gemswhich might be imagined to offer their fragrance and fragile beauty tothe prisoner as he went in and to the condemned criminal as he cameforth to his doom in token that the deep heart of Nature could pity andbe kind to him In the novel Pearl pronounced that she was pluckedfrom the rosebush and was born The rosebush shows that good things cancome from bad occurrences In the beginning Pearl was described as thedevil child But toward the end Pearl became the key to everyonessalvation To the prisoners the rosebush outside of the prison gave themhope and a remembrance of salvationShe had wondered without rule or guidance in a moral wilderness asvast as intricate and shadowy as the untamed forest In the novelHester Prynne is being compared to a dark and gloomy forest The forestwas a place where there was no human authority and Hester lived on theedge of the forest The forest brought out various sides of eachcharacter that had entered it When some characters entered the forestit brought out the sinister thoughts and wrong doings of that characterBut others found freedom and happiness in the forest Once within theforest all characters where able to open up and be them-selvesIf a man wears one mask in public and another in private he will soonforget which one is real Arthur Dimmesdales
