Earth Song is a ballad incorporating elements of blues gospel and even opera Michael Jackson never showed any shame in regards to coming out with songs that withheld socially conscious material Earth Song talked about the environment animal welfare warfare and the destruction and rebirth of the earth The song received a Grammy nomination in 1997 In most European countries the song ranked top five Michael Jacksons Earth Song speaks to the pain of the crying earth Although the pianos melody is soft and simple it yields a powerful message fueled by mellifluous sounds The song is three-dimensional through its ability to ask rhetorical questions such as what about sunrise and what about rain in order to form connections with the listeners emotions The imagery of those rhetorical questions forms an earthly mood For instance the Earth smiles during the sunrise and cries for help during a thunderstorm Jackson links humanity with nature The song is very powerful in two particular ways the way Michaels voice quivers with emotion and how he makes the transition from ahhhs to ooohs Not only do each of these phrases intensify the emotion but one can also begin to notice that it is no longer one man singing Those ahhhs and ooohs exemplify the Earths elements singing together during a moment of triumph This is a lot like how it was with old Negro spiritualshymns When one could not find the words to say one would just hum Even though the vocals in this song are filled with grief it is still a beautiful song Soon the tempo builds thus intensifying the ooohs and even the coming out of a full sounding gospel choir Jackson talks about how he used to dream and says but now I dont know where we are He basically goes from singing to shouting or chanting It is easy to hear that it was genuinely coming from his heart and soul The
