Albert Einstein once said In matters of truth and justice there is no difference between large and small problems for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same The Age of Reason contained many writers who blossomed in this era and responded to many political and social issues These writers addressed the issues of their times in their writings and believed that a solution could be found Four major selections of literature from this era that addressed life problems were A Modest Proposal The Diary The Education of Women and The Spectator Club Each of these stories of satire serve a purpose of disillusioning the people of the era and changing in order to become better as a society Each writer responds to the issues of his day in a revealing and thoughtful way Swift Pepys Defoe and Steele each shine light on societal issues and precede the ideas of the new era to come They demonstrate compassion tolerance and kindheartedness Each of these men will lend voice to issues that have never been heard before In A Modest Proposal Swift sheds light onto how the situation in Ireland is incredibly dire and how the people are being treated terribly He speaks to the people of parliament in such a way of satire and sarcasm that these people living in their ivory towers eventually realize his point Through his words these people are hit with the realization of how the poverty in Ireland is disturbingly horrible Swift sarcastically suggests to the people in parliament ridiculous solutions to solve the problem of poverty in Ireland The problem in Ireland is that everyone is starving and impoverished The potato famine caused hardship for many and families were starving People were having many children therefore Swifts proposal was that infants should be sold for their meat and eaten This solution would solve the overpopulation problem and the hunger problem People were horrified by his proposal of
