My mom will be fifty in two years She is physically active and has all her teeth Many of her friends are already over fifty and they too are in pretty good shape They all have laptops and cell phones with regular size numbers and keys Ive never viewed my mom as the diaper wearing denture chomping old woman who needed to crawl onto her mobile scooter to get around in the supermarket However it would seem the advertisers on television have very different ideas of what and how an elderly or senior citizen behavesI believe advertisers portray older people in their advertisements as weak and helpless Of course there are the elderly who require scooter cars and various medical assisted services however it would seem the majority portrayed are ready for the nursing home The advertisers take advantage of their vulnerability In the advent of modern technology one way that advertisers target older people is by offering the Life Call System This system offers senior citizens the ability to retrieve help from the police ambulance and alert their families for quick response to their problem Because many senior citizens live by themselves it is easier to target this age group because when by themselves they feel more secure that someone is readily there to assist them They also feel more connected to the outside peopleTheir approach to selling these products is not fair because theyre selling fear Advertisers are banking on the fact that the elderly are going to be scared enough to purchase their product Im sure repeated vision of an elderly falling and having difficulty getting up will instill fear into older people that could be me scenario may enter their mind In their cunning the advertisers have considered the fact that many families cant afford to have their parents placed in a nursing home Or the elderly themselves are not ready to leave their homes Its almost like the
