The word marriage is defined as A formal union between a man and woman typically recognized by the law by which the become husband and wife Until 1993 no one questioned this definition of marriage that each state had everyone went on with their life not thinking to fight for marriage equality This was until Hawaiis Supreme Court ruled same sex marriage violated our equal protection rights from this point on states across the United States have been overruling this statutory language for marriage and making same sex marriage a civil union marriage all across the United StatesThe fight for gay marriage rights doesnt start or end just there The fight for the same beneficiaries that a man and woman get from being married is also just as important for the gay marriage movement Some states are for gay marriage and believe that denying people of marriage just because their civil union does not consist of a man and woman does not mean they should be denied of their rights Although some states did feel this way they still wanted to preserve their definition of marriage thus just giving same sex couples the same benefits as a man and woman marriageIn 1993 the state of Hawaiis Supreme Court started a movement of marriage equality by stating that denying same sex marriage is a clear violation of our violated equal protection rights This had a positive and negative effect on the United States Some states began to clearly define that a civil union marriage is strictly between a man and woman while others began to really think if denying same-sex marriage was unconstitutional By the end of 2000 40 states had constitutional provisions limiting same-sex marriage while one state started taking action and making the move towards legalizing same-sex marriageThat one state was Vermont In 2000 Vermont recognized same gender couples and passed landmark legislation on same sex couples being a part of civil unions This
