The History and Purpose of the SETI Program

In this essay, the student introduces the reader to SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence). The student narrates its history from initial midcentury experiments by Giuseppe Cocconi and Phil Morrison, Francis Drake's Ozma project, and into the Phoenix Project and SETI@home. The student takes the position that the search for intelligence life is laudable and should continue.

"Your presentation is clear and organized well, and you provide the history of the program in an efficient and dynamic manner that moves the reader along with interest. Your later discussion of the opinions for and against the search helps the reader understand the different sides, allowing for a well-rounded portrait that remains objective. In your first and final sentences, I see the words "fear" and "frightening"; however, the discussion doesn't touch on this as motivation. I'm curious how central that emotion is to your discussion -- if it should be expanded in the body, or if the opening and closing should be adjusted to better reflect your position regarding fear.

In terms of lower-order concerns, I notice about half of the parenthetical citations have the punctuation appearing before, rather than after, the parenthetical. Make sure to clean those up! A careful proofread will help you catch other similar minor issues that appear occasionally. I also see some opportunities to revise for style, such as phrases like "often based on the basis of..." (in the discussion about funding) that can be streamlined for impact and flow."
