Imagine having a simple headache that an osteopathic physician could easily treat through manipulative therapy but due to the lack of finances and infrastructure you simply must endure the headache These are the conditions of most Guinean citizens Due to scarcity of resources most have little faith in modern medicine They would rather turn to traditional medicinal practices to treat their ailments My goal as an osteopathic physician would be to alleviate the condition of these people by treating their symptoms as well as ameliorating the environment within which they live Throughout the few years I lived in Guinea West Africa the hospital was an institution of which I was afraid The hospital was a place where you waited for doctors in hot stuffy waiting room filled with the smell of urine and mosquitoes It was an institution with scarce resources and inadequate sanitary measures As a patient one becomes horrified of the idea of a doctor using instruments on your body that heshe may have used on so many other patients Would you as a patient allow a doctor to inject you with a used needle The answer would be an immediate no for those of us who have had the privilege to experience medical care in countries such as the US However to people living under devastated circumstances a simple blood transfusion may be their only chance to continue living Subsequent to my arrival to the United States I concluded that my contribution to society no matter how small or large would entail a career within the healthcare field My perspective on patient care dramatically changed as I became exposed to medicine in the United States I begin to realize that there are many parameters to the treatment of patients Through working at a clinic I realized that the care of a patient began as soon as they stepped into the clinic Small factors such as proper sterilization and discard of instruments
