TitleI spent my service day at Room in the Inn Room in the Inn is an organization founded by a preacher that felt obligated to fulfill his Christian responsibilities by allowing homeless people to stay in his church on a cold winter night in 1986 After the first night he continued to allow them to spend the night in the church so that they would be provided with food and warmth He recruited three other congregations at that time and by the end of the winter had 31 congregations total Now there are over 180 congregations that participate in the act of providing food and shelter to homeless people The programs being on November 1st and run through March 31st More and more volunteers help every year just like more and more participants as they call them are taken care of by the programs Upon arriving at Room in the Inn I was immediately surprised at the appearance The building was huge It looked extremely nice designed to fit in with other buildings around Nashville but the amount of homeless people that were sitting outside would quickly make someone realize that it was not just another building that held countless offices inside Walking inside was no different It was very nicely designed and decorated with homeless people everywhere as well Looking around I noticed that some of the people were sitting in this lobby doing absolutely nothing while others were sleeping reading or at least talking to others When the woman leading us could say hello to people and address them using their name and them reply to her using hers it proved a sense of community to me Not that I felt there would not have been before entering I really had not thought too much about it After informing us of the organizations history she took us on a tour of the building and shoed us the numerous activities participants could sign up
