Sex and Gender are rooted in biology What does it mean to be male and what does it mean to be female in society today In the past the terms sex and gender were sometimes used interchangeably yet today according to the text New Society sex refers to biological differences between males and females and gender refers to the behaviours that are associated with being masculine and feminine This leads us to the two perspectives on the relationship among sex and gender that was also mentioned in New Society First social constructionism says that gender roles and sexual scripts emerge in response to the different social positions occupied by women and men Second essentialism says that gender roles and sexual scripts develop naturally from biological differences between the two sexes Each view makes some very convincing points making it difficult to actually form a black and white opinion about the above statement Based on some interesting evidence from both views an idea was generatedthe power of culture and social forces are forces that modify our biological make-up Therefore the base ideas that nature is the ultimate force of who we are when we are born is correct but social forces are the ultimate force of who we become and how we in fact turn out Factors that lead to the biological belief is that there are other characteristics between males and females besides genitals that are physical Sexual dimorphism is the presence of secondary sex differences between adult males and females being body size etc The learned characteristics of being masculine and feminine came from somewhere meaning who decided that playing with dolls is a girl thing and boys playing with guns is a boy thing before culture existed Those motives must have come from somewhere long ago and they must have come from an instinctive motive Now of course in present time those things are part of cultures norms making us in
