The women with a childhood sexual abuse history were more likely to have attempted suicide andor engaged in deliberate self-harm Gladstone et al 1417 Throughout the years many young women have struggled for freedom to deal with problems including sexual assault self-harm and depression These difficulties have become obstacles with which women have had to face It is possible that women who have more experience with sexual abuse are more vulnerable to these issues than those who do not These issues can also lead women to depression and even commit suicide It can also be more likely for women to become victims of sexual assault Chris Abani a Nigerian author wrote the novella Becoming Abigail 2006 which is a story about a girl named Abigail who struggles with her own life from Nigeria to London England From her mothers funeral to the sexual offenses committed by her relatives including her cousin Peter Abigail also tries to deal with difficulties in discovering her own identity Abigail ultimately commits suicide as a response to the unsuccessful struggle with her experience of abuse It can be concluded that Abani accurately portrays a typical response to sexual abuse through Abigails character Therefore she has defensive reactions to cope with sexual abuse and psychological problems is unable to care for herself inflicts her self-pain as a way of purification and ultimately commits suicide as a response to failure to cope with abuseAbanis portrayal of Abigails response to sexual abuse is accurate Abigail reacts realistically to Peters attempted rape by developing post-traumatic stress disorder which is common in many rape victims According to Impact of Sexual Abuse on Children A Review and Synthesis of Recent Empirical Studies 1993 fears post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD and poor self-esteem occurred most frequently among a long list of symptoms noted but no one symptom characterized a majority of sexually abused children Kendall-Tackett et al 164 Abigail is a perfect example of a child
