A special gift is not just something one might give on a holiday rather the foundation of gift-giving rests on expressing the meaning of personal relationships between people These endowments can be in the form of physical objects but they have more meaning when presented as intangible actions In Harper Lees novel To Kill a Mockingbird meaningful gifts benefit their recipients the majority of them given by Boo Radley Through Boos tangible and intangible gifts Lee shows how the purpose of giving a gift is to share a part of oneself with othersThe physical objects that Boo leaves for Scout and Jem in the oak trees knothole each represent a part of Boos life It is interesting how in Celtic mythology the oak represented doorways to other realms Ruth Similarly Boo finds a way to communicate with Scout and Jem who are considered to be in the real world separate from Boos private secluded one After Scout sees some tinfoil winking at her in the afternoon sun she picks it up and crams the Wrigleys Double-Mint into her mouth 33 In the past the chewing gum was a small luxury for Boo given that many people in the South lived in poverty The two small images carved in soap 59 show how regardless of his mental illnesses Boo carefully observes Jem and Scout and creates art of the children As a result Jem and Scout start to understand Boos artistic talent Later Scout and Jem see a tarnished spelling medal awarded to spelling bee winners 60 This particular gift symbolizes the passing of special objects to the next generations since the medal is old and tarnished Its possible that Boo cherished the medal in his childhood after winning it at school Scout and Jems last gift is their biggest prize a pocket watch chained to an aluminum knife 60 Again Boo seems to have appreciated this prized possession as he aged and now passes it
