Alexie illustrates how Junior comes to terms with himself throughstruggling to achieve a balance between his conflicting identities onthe rez and at Reardan Alexie explores the struggle of dealing with conflicting morals on therez and at Reardan in order for Junior to come to terms with himself Onthe reservation the people have a physical way of dealing with theiremotions unlike the kids at Reardan On Juniors first day at his newschool he comes across Roger a big tough guy and his gang They startmaking rude comments toward Junior being an Indian Junior takes it uponhimself to defend part of his culture and punch Roger in the face Rogerand his friends thought of Junior as a lunatic White students atReardan dont act out physically and were caught off guard by Juniorsactions This refers back to the struggling of conflicting morals backon the rez and at Reardan Junior was used to harsh fistfights to solveproblems rather than at Reardan they are complete opposites Its hardfor Junior to adapt to these different ways of dealing with emotions andbehavior Junior eventually finds that balance of being able to stick upfor himself without getting into a fistfight As Junior spends more timeat Reardan he starts to build more friendships His friends start tosupport him when he is going through times of grief but the kids on therez never thought of supporting Juniors grief because death occurredall the time After Juniors grandmothers funeral he decides its timeto go back to school When Junior enters the classroom his teacher isnot very supportive of him and comments on his lack of attendanceGordy one of Juniors friends stands up and drops his textbook on thefloor as a sign of protest Soon enough the whole classroom drops theirbooks and walks out The kids dropping their books gave Junior thesupport he needed and made him appreciate the kids at Reardan On therez the kids had death all the time and none of them would think
