In recent years the problem of childhood obesity in the United States has attracted national attention The White House reported that 1 in 3 children in the United States was obese The National Center for Health Statistics 2010 showed that the obesity rate of children aged 6 to 11 increased from 65 to 196 There are many causes of obesity in children However for almost three decades people have been primary focused on the relationship between television watching and childhood obesity Childhood obesity is related to a series of factors such as genetics the risen of living standard and lack of exercise In addition studies of media effects on obesity in children demonstrate a direct positive correlation between obesity and the growing consumption of media Hancox Poulton 2006 Television plays an important role in promoting high-calorie low-nutrition food and it enables the food industry to reach families in their homes The Kaiser Family Foundation showed that adolescents and children aged 8 to 18 spent an average 75 hours per day watching television The Nielson Company also found that children aged 6 to 11 spend an average of 28 hours per week watching television Due to advanced in technology kids received more novelties than the past and the chances of getting in touch with media is much more than previous According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the prevalence of overweight in children ages 6 to 11 has more than doubled since 1980 and the rate for adolescents has tripled About 1 in 5 children ages 2 to 5 and almost 1 in 3 older children are either overweight or at risk for being overweight Approximately 50 of obese children and adolescents will become obese adults An estimated 80 of overweight adolescents will be overweight as adults Federal Trade
