In the United States there is a desire to be attractive and thin resulting in high levels of body dissatisfaction by many women and men in Western society This a result of social comparisons made mainly with idealized media images Tiggemann Polivy 2010 Festinger 1954 proposed that there is a drive for social comparisons within humans this drive helps to evaluate and determine if our opinions and beliefs are correct and help gain an accurate idea of ones ability and standing Further when presented information about others abilities fortunes characteristics etc we tend to relate it to ourselves Corcoran Crusius Mussweiler 2011 The greater the importance or relevance the comparison is to the individual the greater the amount of pressure the individual feels Festinger 1954 There is additional pressure in American culture where value placed on improvement with continued effort The result is a cultural phenomenon of always trying to improve often this is accomplished as a result of comparing oneself to others Festinger 1954 A popular source of comparison is the media in particular fashion magazines which promote thinness perfection and eating disorder symptomatology Tiggemann Polivy 2010 Most social comparisons with media images result in negative effects women often make upward comparisons to beautiful and idealized images and find they feel inadequate Tiggemann Polivy 2010 These social comparisons can impact daily interactions with others cause psychological symptomatology and can affect therapeutic interactions Overall social comparisons impact self-evaluations and self-esteem often resulting in high levels of body dissatisfaction especially when comparing to an unattainable ideal Corcoran et al 2011 At a clinical level this could present itself as a personality disorder body image disorder mania or depression The impact of social comparisons is pervasive and affects all aspects of ones life Social Comparison TheoryFestingers 1954 Social Comparison Theory identified a fundamental psychological mechanism that affects behavior thoughts feelings and overall experiences Corcoran et al 2011 His theory stresses the importance
