At least 1 in 9 Americans over age 60 has experienced some form of elder abuse Thats about 5 million elders who are abused each year and for every one case of abuse at least five more go unreported The reason for this is because elder abuse usually happens within family members or a trusted individual This is a social injustice issue because it is utterly under-reported hidden and under-recognized There are many risk factors associated with elder abuse researchers have shown that it can shorten a life of a victim and a decline in physical function The basic ethical principle of nonmalificence states that we shall not cause harm to anyone In the Catholic teaching it states that human life is sacred and all life has values and deserves respect with a special concern for the poor disabled elderly or mentally ill We should do everything we can to preserve the human life that God had created First of all one of the risk factors associates with elder abuse is higher mortality rate In the Womens Health Initiative experiment 2009 the main focus of the study was to determine whether there is a relationship between physical and verbal abuse and if mortality are greater for women who were abused The study included about 160000 women ages from 50 to 79 and were asked questions like Over the past year were you physically abused by being hit slapped pushed shoved punched or threatened with a weapon by a family member or close friend and Over the past year were you verbally abused by being made fun of severely criticized told you were a stupid or worthless person by a family member or close friend Results showing that 22 reported physical abuse 887 reported verbal abuse and 92 reported both abuse types In Figure 1 graph it shows that women who were physically abuse had 107 rate of death per 1000 person-years compare to women who
