In modern society power rules nearly every aspect of the human existence Men and women with power control how everyone else should act and behave in the social order In Ken Keseys novel One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest and William Shakespeares The Tempest the two authors create a world which revolves around power Both Kesey and Shakespeare beautifully craft characters with strong will and dedication that exude a sense of supremacy and in turn use their powerful attributes to their advantage The characters bend the world around them through manipulation in order to gain control over their peers The setting and tactics in Ken Keseys One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest and Williams Shakespeares The Tempest allow for the ideal development of the figures of powerNurse Ratched from One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest is able to take advantage of her surroundings and utilize everything at her disposal in her quest for power The psychiatric facility in order to be run properly must have nurses and doctors to help treat the patients and to handle day-to-day care This well-established system creates the perfect rise to power for Nurse Ratched Her position allows her the strength to rule over the patients and dictate everything about their lives Also with Nurse Ratcheds years of experience she is rarely questioned or advised in what she does Without the advisement of superiors Ratched ignores basic human freedoms such as the right to property in exchange for maintaining order Her liberty and status create the perfect breeding ground which begins a reign of terrorSince the environment in The Tempest creates such a stressful atmosphere for the characters it is easy for Prospero to gain control Because the population on the island is limited the natural hierarchy of human nature begins to take effect Prospero is the oldest and most educated entity on the island thus putting him in the prime position of power Prosperos seniority set the scene for
