Society has managed to create the idea that there is a certain way thatone should act live and even think Every choice an individual makesis judged whether it is how they choose to dress themselves how theirhair is styled whether they wear makeup or not and many other day today decisions Bromley 2012 Our identities that are meant toindividualize us are socially constructed Rather than choosing tobehave the way we want to individuals in society have been raised insuch a way that they simply assume that they are heterosexual and thattheir genitals determine their gender identity As an child grows upthey may find that they do not feel secure or comfortable in the genderidentity that has been placed upon them This insecurity results inquestioning their normality thinking that something is wrong with themIn reality there is something wrong with the expectations that societyenforces individuals to adhere by Therefore it is evident that genderidentity is a socially constructed concept that impacts youth byimplying that there are no other options than to identify oneself as aheterosexual male or female Gender does not exist independently in the natural world but it israther an invention created by society Before an individual is borntheir parents have already distinguished what their gender identityshould be based on their sexual organs Based on this distinguishingfactor they would have either painted their room and purchased pinkclothing if it were to be a girl and blue if it were a boy These twocolours display stereotypical concepts where the colour pink is morefeminine and blue represents masculinity Gender is also assumed by achilds body shape the toys that they choose to play with and how theyspeak For example when I was only 6 years old my mother decided thatI should get a haircut Although she told me it would only be a smalltrim the hairdresser cut off nearly all of my hair This left my hairfalling slightly above the top of my ears I remember crying
