Sociology of Minorities In the movie The Hurricane the main character Rueben Carter strongly valued survival Two scenes in particular clearly displayed Rueben possessing this value In the first scene Rueben Carter is being locked up in prison to serve a life sentence for a murder he did not commit He had literally fought his way up the social ladder from a poor African American family to the world of a famous prizefighter only then to be framed for a murder with which he was not involved Reuben understood within himself the only way to survive his life sentence was to retain his personal beliefs not to conform to the prison rules which represented to him the injustice and authority of the white man In this first scene the warden asked Rueben routinely to strip and put on the regulation prison uniform Rueben was clothed in a very expensive suit and refused to change into the prison clothing He told the warden he could not do it that he would not wear the clothes of a guilty man He told the warden that they might have legal custody over his body but not over his mind He stood there bravely without breaking his stare into the wardens face and stated also that he had committed no crime and the only crime that had been committed was against him Rueben again refused to change into prison clothes knowing that if he conceded his spirit would be broken He had to keep his survival instinct intact Consequently the warden sentenced Reuben to 90 days in the hole In the hole Rueben again strongly displayed his value of survival The hole was a little cell with hardly enough room to move about located in the dark basement of the prison There was no other light down there save for a single light bulb outside of
