Love is a mystifying idea that many have tried to understand and explain for centuries Throughout both First Alcibiades and the Symposium Love is discussed and broken down in many different ways It is defined through medical terms through law and through gods but Alcibiades and Socrates see love differently than any of those They provide prime examples of love through their actions and stories They contribute very largely to both dialogues and Alcibiades does the best job of realistically summarizing love in the SymposiumAlcibiades plays a key role in not only his own speech but also in the dialogue First Alcibiades In this dialogue we discover that Alcibiades is the aim of Socrates love Even though love is not directly discussed we can see it exemplified by the fact that the discussion is centered around Socrates helping and mentoring Alcibiades Socrates starts the conversation by saying that he was the first man to fall in love with Alcibiades Plato P 154 L103a Socrates has many men pursuing him but shows that his love is only for Alcibiades This is compelling in and of itself because a young man who is not very intellectual is the one who becomes the aim of a great philosophers passions As said before Alcibiades and his quest to speak at the assembly are the themes of this dialogue Socrates spends their entire discourse challenging Alcibiades to examine himself and his knowledge Plato P 158-171 Through his mentoring and method of Socratic questioning Socrates shows his love for Alcibiades Socrates critiques and corrects Alcibiades only because he wants him to succeed He even states that he wants to exert great influence over Alcibiades Plato P 156 L 105e By saying this Socrates shows that he truly cares about Alcibiades and the goals that he has for himself He wishes to be a large part of Alcibiades journey of knowledge and understanding I feel that Socrates continual search to help
