Mother and Father have not been right latelyThats what Bess Clarence thought as she strolled away from her older sisters room Mary her senior by ten years would lie in bed for hours at a time with their parents present at her side for mere hours a day Her skin remained the color ofa sickly pale paste like substance with dark circles running beneath her waterline And yet her parents seemed completely apathetic toMarys stateunless those eccentric people were around to visit her Who were they againBess tried to recall Oh yes that nice man Dr Yaris comes over with the menacinglawyer Mr ThompsonThe later of the two frightened Bess for he was so tall and daunting with his serious frowns and monotonous voice She once heard a maid whisper of his reputation he was thought to have caused the death of his previous wife but no proof could be found This added to the childs severe unease when he sauntered through the richly carved hallways of her houseIt was June in 1565 and Mary had just taken her yearly bath when she began to experience faintings hot flashes and severe nausea Bess theorized that thats whatbrought on Marys hasty illness and worried for two months that the same fate might befall her as well Now Mary could barely lift her head from her pillow and when servants were able to take her away from her sickbed it was only to sit in front of her old vanity applying some sort of lotion to her skin and a colored powder to her eyes When asked the servants mumbled that it would help with her mysterious disease She looked soill And it frustrated poor Bess to no end that no one in the house would talk to her about what afflicted her sisterBesss mother remained silent as usual and kept to her room for the most part never bothering to visit Mary despite her current condition
