In William Shakespeares sonnet Sonnet 76 the poet actually questions his ordinary and normal style of writing He wonders if his writing can compete with other writings of that time In his sonnets the theme is normally his love or love itself Sonnet 76 deals with the conflict and the resolution of Shakespeares self-examination of his reasons for continuing to write love-themed sonnets An English sonnet or Shakespearean sonnet is a lyric poem with a traditional form of fourteen iambic pentameter lines Pfordeesher Veidemanis and McDonald 925 Shakespeare does not always follow the Shakespearean sonnet format but in Sonnet 76 he does He stays true to the usual rhyme scheme of ababcdcdefefgg that these particular sonnets have Also as in all of Shakespeares sonnets he is the speaker In the first two quatrains Shakespeare questions his writings He asks whether his poetry is still relevant He thinks of his verse as repetitive and worn out He claims that his verse is barren of new pride line 1 and far from variation or quick change line 2 In other words he continues his same format and theme in his sonnets and is concerned that he no longer has anything new to say Why does Shakespeare continue to write on the same subjects of love and his love He answers this question in the third quatrain by saying his love remains the same He does not want to completely reinvent the words or the format of his poetry when nothing has changed the old words and format are sufficient to express his feelings As stated in this sonnet And you and love are still my argument So all my best is dressing old words new line 10 and 11 He does not need to invent new words when he can refine the words that he has already used Shakespeare does not have to waste effort on new thoughts when love is still his main topic In Shakespeares
