Prior to the beginning of Antigone much has already occurred Eteoclesand Polyneices were the sons of Oedipus and Jocaste therefore thebrothers of Antigone and Ismene They had inherited the throne but theyagreed to alternatively rule the city of Thebes Eteocles refused torelinquish the throne after his first year of ruling He exiled hisPolyneices only for him to return and attack resulting in a bloodycivil war The two brothers killed one another Creon their uncle ispresently in charge and proclaims that Eteocles is to be buried withfull military honors On the other hand Polyneices is to be leftunburied in the field to rot and be devoured by carrion birds Anybodywho disobeys this edict is to be stoned to death Creon made this decreebecause he despised Polyneices believing him to be the enemy forattacking his own city According to Greek tradition and values onessoul never rests in Hades if not given a proper burial Creonsproclamation is the ultimate punishment These events have a seriousinfluence on the plays actions Creons edict results in Antigonesrefusal to allow her brother to suffer this unthinkable sentence so shedefiantly breaks the unjust law This results in the highlighting ofCreons hubris as he decrees his law of higher importance than divinelaw Creons pride and unjust ruling therefore results in the tragicdeaths of Antigone Haimon and Queen EurydiceDuty and obedience are motifs woven throughout Antigone expressing theconnections to family law and the divine gods Antigone expresses theGreek values of duty to the gods and family She shows that it is moreimportant to be dutiful and obedient to the law of gods burying thedead than to the law of man Creons edict to leave Polyneicesunburied Antigone also shows the importance of being devoted to onesfamily by risking her own life to preserve the respect of her deceasedbrother Haimon also exemplifies the theme of duty to ones family Inthe beginning of Scene III Haimon declares that he is fully obedient tohis father Creon Creon is satisfied
