Spectroscopy is a tool used in many different aspects of science today It is basically the study of how matter interacts with energy Spectroscopy can help scientists find planets and determine the chemical composition of stars outside of our solar system Spectroscopy can also be used to help understand and study our own planet Without having to spend all of your money on expensive equipment to understand how spectroscopy works a simple experiment called the flame test can show how spectroscopy works This test involves passing a chemical through a flame which changes the color of the flame The color of the flame represents the atoms and molecules of the chemical The reason a flame changes color when different chemicals are passed through it can be explained through the science of spectroscopy Spectroscopy is the study of the connection between matter and radiated energy Spectroscopic information is represented by a spectrum which is the band of colors shown from a rainbow that is the components of light separated It is also the daily observations of color Dyes and paints have chemical compounds that are chosen for their spectral characteristics which make them generate specific colors Lewotsky Verstynen Spectroscopy is based at the atomic level and can be explained by electrons being able to move from one orbit to another An electron in its original orbit around the nucleus of the atom is called its ground state To move from its ground state to a different orbit farther away from the nucleus the electron has to absorb energy When an electron absorbs energy and moves to a different orbit chemists call this its excited state An electron cannot stay in this excited state for too long and in a process called decay the electron releases the excess energy it had absorbed and returns to its natural ground state When this
