The followings are strategies and clues and my reflection- reactions feelings and implications from a non-English language television show in an unknown language Instead of watching two 30-minute episodes of this television serial I have watched the first full episode of seventy two minutes The television show is called Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu which is a Taiwanese drama filmed in a language of Mandarin Chinese Strategies and CluesAs soon as the video started the camera shows two female characters Rui Xi and Julia having a conversation in an upbeat voice This face-to face conversation between Rui Xi and Julia is rich in context clues such as gestures facial expressions and concrete objects at hand to help convey meaning Peregoy Boyle 2013 p47 Rui Xis lively voice shows her interest in the conversation topic She is holding scissors in her hand as she makes cutting gestures She has a smile on her face throughout the prologue This conveys her excitement as well as her determination in cutting her hair In the room the pictures of a man cover the walls and Julia says Hes like a total stranger to you You dont even know this guy 0056 Based on these visual clues around the room Rui Xi is either fanatic or has a very high respect of this man The conversation ends with Rui Xi finally cutting her hair short and the camera moves onto the opening The opening briefly shows multiple scenes where Rui Xi is disguised as a boy with extremely short hair and enrolled at an all-boys middle or high school setting This suggests that the show is comprised of episodes about Rui Xis new school life The opening also frequently shows scenes of Rui Xi and two other men which suggests that there are three main characters in this story including Rui Xi Quan the guy and Xiu Yi another classmate As the show progresses there are multiple
