Water By the Spoonful is a dramatic detailed play written by Quiara Alergia Hudes Water By the Spoonful places your imagination in a variety of settings The first scene you begin to see is a war veteran Elliot Ortiz suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder As the play quickly progresses you find Elliot placed in a sandwich shop struggling with a knee injury and trying to get by despite his family problems Next you are introduced to a group of people who are chatting online As they communicate through an Internet website you come to realize that they are each recovering drug addicts struggling to stay sober The setting of the play switches back and forth from the online chat room to Elliot enduring his day-to-day struggles Next you are introduced to a new character Yasmin Yasmin is Elliots cousin and she is struggling with her complicated family Throughout this play you can see a reoccurring theme a struggle Each person in this play is struggling with some type of issue Whether this issue may be equal or a completely different they each are experiencing a struggle that they wish to overcome By the help of one another they slowly overcome their struggles together During my experience watching the play Water By the Spoonful I thought they succeeded in communicating the theme of the play from the beginning The play started out with the lead character Elliot struggling to translate a phrase he found on a piece of paper Then it moves into three people struggling with staying sober Every new setting you saw a character experiencing a problem but there was always someone there to help them through it For example when Fountainhead joins the website he presents his problems to Haikumom and she helped him through his issues and advised him on what to do Orangutan experiences a variety of problems When she wants to meet her birth parents Chutes
