The Relational Center TRC is a 501c3 founded in 2007 Mark Fairfield the Executive Director had the idea for TRC when students who wanted clinical training in radical social change approached him The students wanted to work in the community and learn mental health practice that was community-based which created half of TRC The other half is comprised of activists and organizersAt present moment part of the mission is to serve as a catalyst for empathic diverse sustainable community in Los Angeles and beyond The Relational Center nd However they are undergoing an organizational change which may prompt a new or modified mission statement to clarify their complex approach to change Their current approach is summarized in their Cycle of Change Figure 11 above If the heart of TRCs mission statement were summed up in one word their culture would be that of interdependenceThe Relational Center went from a yearly budget of 50000 to 500000 with no government support Private family foundations and public foundations helped to create this mental health project that has nothing to do with mental health This is the DNA of TRC as it provides services yet also has a philosophy that people may consider radical and subversive Those particularly in the helping profession who are able to absorb the underlying or umbrella idea of TRC believe it is revolutionary and absolutely needed yet part of the challenge is that not everyone is able to understand the complexity of their mission and approachThe current organizational chart is noted in Figure 12 below The counselors work in the TRC location and the organizers have no space thus often meet in coffee shops houses or at other agencies Due to the current separation of departments the organizers and counselors rarely meet andor interact The activists do not provide services and the service providers counselors do not think like an activist nor believe they are in the business of social change Rather they are
