13 year old Matilda had a dream She wanted to run her own business Matilda lived with her mother and grandfather Eliza was the coffeehouse cook and close friend Her mother had run the coffeehouse ever since Matildas father died Matildas life was going perfectly until all the sudden an epidemic broke out It was Yellow fever Thousands of people died because of this disease and over 50 percent of the town had fled into the country within a few months Matilda was a determined teenager with a big dream This is how her dream came true she never gave up when times got hard and she never let anyone tell her what to do and control her liveIn the beginning of the book Matildas mother Lucille was struck with yellow fever Matilda was more than willing to nurse her mother Lucille wanted Matilda to leave the town because of the fever victims A few mornings later Matilda and her grandfather left in a wagon to go to the country to live with the Ludington family All was going fine until they get stopped by town guards and are evicted from the wagon because the guards thought they were fever victims Matilda and her grandfather were basically left stranded on the side of the street in the middle of nowhere Matildas grandfather was not feeling well so Matilda had to find food water and shelter for the both of them A day later Matilda went for a walk to go find a farmers market Next thing you know she is knocked out and is in the Bush Hill Hospital Apparently Matilda had yellow fever She stayed in Bush Hill for daysOnce she recovered she and her grandfather left Bush Hill and went to the coffeehouse Once they arrived they found that the coffeehouse had been robbed They stayed there for a couple of nights until something terrible happened Matildas grandfather died in the coffeehouse
