George Orwells essay Shooting an Elephant takes place in Lower Burma in India He was an English Imperial Police officer a job that he despised In Burma the feeling towards English that were occupying them was very bitter Insults would be made from afar but up close no one would attempt anything Standing on street corners Buddhist priests would mock George He hated his job and was in some ways for the Burmese He had witnessed the torturing of prisoners and the scars of those who had been whipped At the same time he hated the snickering and bitterness of the BurmeseOne day George was sent to see about an elephant that had been ravaging the poor village Asking the locals seemed troublesome he never got a straight answer from them It was only until a Burmese lady shooed her children away from a trampled mangled body when he got real answers Upon seeing this twisted devilish looking corpse George sent a man to get him an elephant rifle The Burmese finally gave him the location of the elephant it was close While on the walk to the paddy field in which the elephant was a crowd of Burmese formed with great anticipation This is when George knew he would shoot the animal He did not want to Yet the enslaver had become the enslaved The crowd of two thousand willed him to shoot the animal And still he did not want to Yet he knew if he didnt he would look like a fool in front of the Burmese George shot the elephant It died slowly George contemplates whether anyone had guessed the real reason as to why he shot the elephant was because he was avoiding looking like a fool
