A father and son relationship is a common familial bond that most men have experienced In this essay I will discuss and explore to further understand the father son relationship between Troy and Cory in the play Fences by August Wilson We will take a look at DrCharles Williams essay The life Cycle of Father- son Relationships in order to get a better understanding of what is going on in the playDrCharles presents the acronym I deal to demonstrate the different stage of the father son relationships The letters stand for Idolize Discord Evolve Acceptance and Legacy While the play does not have a significant focus on Corys idolization of his father it does provide plenty of discord between the two characters As youth grow into adolescence idolization of the father becomes discord a conflict between the two and their views This phase of the life cycle relationship is demonstrated when teenagers become rebellious For example discord occurs in the relationship when a son decide to act a certain way against father expectations In Fences Cory continuously demonstrates discord with his father TroyIn the play Cory is a young African American boy focusing his potential towards a bright future in football As a father Troy feels his con should not put as much work towards a football career and should instead go to school and get a normal job At this point Troy does not want to see Cory fail in this pursuit of a baseball career At one time Troy also had potential to pursue a career in baseball but due to the social circumstance a professional career in the sport was unattainable As a part if the father-son relationship Troy does not want to relive his past failure though his sons high hopes of successThough the play generally overlooks the whole process of Corys evolvement towards acceptance we can ascertain this through the staged breaks in
