Mankind has been fighting on water for over 3000 years But in World War 1 is when it really started to emerge Battles were being held in the sea and many new ship designs such as the dreadnought were being built as well as new strategies by the army In World War 1 was when a country started to be able to rely on just their army their navy had to be equally good to do well The British navy and the German navy were the two biggest naval armies in the world at the time Along with those two navies the Canadian Navy had some small but significant and courageous moments in World War 1In 1914 the British navy had 18 modern dreadnoughts 6 more in construction 20 battle cruisers 10 town cruisers 15 scout cruisers 200 destroyers 29 battleships pre-dreadnought design and 150 cruisers In 1914 the Royal Navy was by far the most powerful navy in the world wwwspartacusschoolnetcouk The Britains were the original designers of the dreadnought but right away the Germans came back with a copy of it The dreadnought is the most heavily armed ship in history She had ten 12-inch guns 305 mm whereas the previous record was four 12-inch guns wwwspartacusschoolnetcouk The British nay did more than just fight though they were the leader so they had to defend the colonies coastlines make sure all trade routes were safe and they had many more responsibilities The biggest threat to them was the German U-boats On September 22 1914 the British lost the ships Cressy Aboukir and Hogue with the loss of 1400 sailors because of the German U-boats Once they realized that they were losing too many men the navy started to be more cautious But recently after that the German navy attacked the towns of Hartlepool Scarborough and Whitby There was a major engagement on May 31 1916 in Jutland where the British outnumbered the Germans
