Everyday use short story by Alice Walker touches important points about family and struggles of trying to preserve and appreciate their heritage The way she presents this conflict is by using symbols like in the beginning of the story she uses the yard and later Dee the only member that received formal education but is the one that does not understand her culture The quilt and the house and Dees new name are also symbols that walker uses These symbols are used to show how culture and heritage are part of daily life and how family can misunderstand itIn the beginning mamas yard is a symbol for privacy and free space where mama feels free to talk about her regrets and shortcomings of life The yard is where she feels free and finds little peaceful escape where she can feel in control over the environment and what is around her In the opening scene she wishes that her daughter Dee would thank her for giving her education and to feel proud of her But instead we read that Dee comes home and the first thing she does is tell her mother about her new name Wangero to reflect the new fad of getting in touch with African heritage Yet her name already came from her heritage because her mama says that her name comes from her aunt and great-grandmother But sadly Dee or should I say Wangero does not see it that way she is refusing to accept that her heritage is the one she shares with her mother and sisterAlso the house represents and s
