Deeper meaning in LiteratureSymbolism and fantasy have been present in fiction since the beginning of literature Symbolism is a way to reveal a greater meaning in something simplistic be it an action or object The genre of fantasy is about a world that differs from reality involving magic and fiction The analysis of symbolism in literature has been very critical throughout history During the late nineteenth century many great poets such as Stphane Mallarm Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine had created a literary movement on what the true meaning of symbolism really meant Many great works of literature have been and still are criticized for what a certain symbol may portray or if it has any relevance at all Works of literature such as symbolism are the key components to what makes works of fantasy ageless being able to connect with any generation During the late nineteenth century there was a great literary movement in France called the Symbolist movement The Symbolists believed that symbolism should be in a pure state and represent genuineness that could only be described through symbolic objects or actions Symbolists focused on dreams and ideas Baudelaire The Symbolists wrote very metaphorically and could be so vague at times that they could have taken place at any time in history Albert Schinz They used a technique in writing that gave almost everything in their literature a deeper meaning and value Their symbols did not represent certain objects or a tangible thing but released ideas in the readers mind that poetry is a way a poets consciousness attempts to reunite with the natural world This is very similar to Northrop Frye in his article Three Meanings of Symbolism where he says there are two different directions in viewing symbolism one being building up a word into a symbol an image Frye states that the relation of words to things is not true not false not tautological and yet not meaningless either he
