Teaching effectively and stimulating student learning in the twenty-first century are far more difficult than in the past Teaching cannot entirely rely on informal practices which are based on old myths intuition spontaneity or personal choices The practices of teachers should draw on accurate information from several domains of knowledge which have been proven to be effective in questioning challenging and changing the behaviors of teachers and producing student learning in and outside of the classroom Evidence-based research based and scientifically based instruction are terms which utilize specific elements that guide programs teaching practices and interventions today Research based instruction is what informs and supports teachers best practices Research based instruction helps validate theories and facts that motivate learning and leadership as well as the connections between teachers expectations student behaviors and high level student learning Arendt 2009 wrote Currently we can be confident of considerable knowledge in several areas some of which have been validated experimentally and replicated under varying conditionspg 23 The approach to instructional practices and intervention advocated in the name of research is that teachers should choose and use practices no matter the subject they teach or grade level supported by knowledge base It should not matter if a teacher is teaching the letters of the alphabet to pre-kindergarten reading recovery to first graders ABA to work with autistic children or a inquiry based instruction to teach a complex mathematical equation to seventh graders Teachers should be experts on their subject matter They should learn how to access and use knowledge based on scientific research Teachers today have access to a large number of approaches to instructional practices and interventions in order to meet students learning goals that have been validated by research Each of these approaches is a teaching model with a theoretical basis or philosophy behind it For example constructivism is a philosophical approach to how we develop and learn Presentation direct instruction concept teaching cooperative learning and classroom
