Over the past ten years technology has become an everyday use in our lives Invented to make tasks easier technology is caused by a variety of reasons Many look to technology as an escape For example when there is an argument between my mom and sister I often find myself going to my room to watch television and avoid the situation Other causes range from a need for leisure time to the desire to find a way to make work easier Although the causes of technology are prominent the effects clearly outweigh themOne of the most influential effects of technology is the lack of sleep users are acquiring Sleep is necessary to achieve a multitude of things such as success in school or promotions at work In his article Growing Up Digital Wired for Distraction author Matt Ritchel discusses the many effects technology has on us Ritchel refers to a study performed by the German Sport University in Cologne that proved the overuse of technology leads to sleep deprivation Ritchel 6 Video games cell phones and the Internet consume many children as a result their amount of sleep is suffering I also find myself falling into this category Frequently I stay up late playing games on my smart phone watching Netflix on my laptop or simply surfing the Internet I always regret these decisions the following morning when I must get up for class or work Ritchel discusses how we should limit the amount of technology we allow ourselves to use rather than taking it out completely Ritchel 7 Although we cannot omit technology from our lives completely we should use less of it in order to get an adequate amount of sleep Due to the increasing use of technology the tools invented to give us more leisure time are causing us to work even more
