Temperance was very common in America in the late 18th into the 19th century Temperance is the illegalization of alcohol Temperance involved the entire US including young kids parents organizations and the government Many people thought this would really help our country get back on track but like many things that are illegalized it does not necessarily stop you from using it The organizations that pushed the hardest for temperance were the American Temperance Society and the anti-cigarette corporation All of these organizations were trying to make alcohol illegal This was important in a lot of families because usually parents who were alcoholics were more abusive This was especially common around the Great Depression because millions of Americans were out of work and were even more agitated so they would take their anger out on whatever they could Temperance organizations accomplished many great goals They finally reached their goal of the illegalization of alcohol The 18th amendment was a great example of success All there hard work had paid off There were a lot more failures than accomplishments some of the failures include the 21st amendment that legalized alcohol Prohibition of alcohol still allowed criminal originations to profit Also lots of young adults started abusing alcohol at an early age People would also illegally consume alcohol this is still a huge problem today where almost everywhere you go you see something about it Although most of these movements were negative to the cause people are still pushing for more temperance reforms and laws Although temperance groups only got there wish for a short period of time there fight lives on in everyones daily life Their efforts affect us today because the drinking age was 18 for a while but because of certain temperance originations the drinking age is now 21 Alcohol is still banned for some people
