Generation Q is an essay that discusses the attitudes of todays twenty something versus those of the authors generation After spending a week visiting several colleges and observing students the author came away with two conflicting feelings This article expresses how he felt both impressed and baffled by the students ideals and whyBasically the author feels like given all that has happened in their lifetimes such as terrorists attacks the students should be more guarded He is amazed that events such as September 11th hasnt deterred them from traveling abroad for pleasure or served to scare them away from joiniw21dng organizations like Teach for America that aid third world countries Fear of war hasnt prevented the young men and women of today from joining the military but done just the opposite He noticed that there were quite a few students that had joined the ROTC program and were proudly wearing their uniforms The students were also doing other admirable things like helping at AIDS clinicsGeneration Q stand for generation quiet The things that baffled the author was how the students seem to take everything going on around them in quiet stride He wonders how they can remain so optimistic and idealistic given impending issues like global warming social security and the budget deficit without actively doing anything about it He pointed out how activist like Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy changed the world through personal social interaction not by sending e-mails or posting their crusades on social media venues like Facebook He thinks the old fashioned modes of activism would serve this generation better and would show they had real conviction in their ideals He stressed that virtual politics falls short in comparison to actively engaging in important issues by using ones voice and through face to face personal interaction In surmise the author states that real activism looks like courage like that of James Meredith who defied a violent angry mob
