The 1920s were an age of spectacular social and political change we call it The Roaring Twenties It was the first time that more Americans moved into cities than on farms The nations wealth was doubled between 1920 and 1929 and this economic change had an effect on every American Thanks to nationwide advertising and the spread of chain stores people were able to buy the same goods from everywhere listened to the same music did the same dances and had same slang However the 1920s brought not only benefit but also brought more conflict People were uncomfortable to adapt this new change and some of them protested about the new changes Here are three important changes happened around 1920s Prohibition Jazz and New women ProhibitionProhibition was a period of nearly fourteen years of US history in which the manufacture sale and transportation of liquor was made illegal It led to the first and only time an Amendment to the US Constitution was repealed Aboutcom 20th Century HistoryAnti-Saloon League and the Womens Christian Temperance Union led the rebellion against the use of alcohol The dry forces had won by linking Prohibition to a various of progressive era social causes The women proponents were concerned about alcohols causing violence in both wife and child In industry proponents such as Henry Ford were concerned about drinking alcohol would affect labors productivity Advocates of Prohibition assumed that banning producing alcohol would finish the corruption end machine politics and help Americanize immigrants In 1917 President Woodrow Wilson instituted a short prohibition in order to save grain for making food Then in October 1919 the National Prohibition act was passed by Congress But both federal and local governments found difficulty to enforce Prohibition over the 1920s Internal Revenue Service first took responsibility to do the job and later was transferred to the Justice Department However prohibition had more power in rural areas and small towns where people are sympathetic
