What do you believe causes students to fall behind academically First of all I would like to say that after reading the first few chapters of Not for ESOL Teachers I find it tragic and unfortunate that this is happening in our school systems One of many reasons and probably the main cause our students are falling behind academically is the barrier between our languages and cultures Many students are not natives of the US therefore they have different cultures rituals and tongues than Americans do We only have the state --who implements impractical standardized tests ourselves --as educators and parents We as teachers do not have the skills to teach our classrooms of large diversities The issue then becomes through what means will we as educators acquire these skills The next issue to tackle is the state As the author states in the book the state mandates tests for our students to take the fact that teachers have been disregarded as the individuals who have the clearest understanding of what needs to be done to successfully educate students in todays world How can our legislators ask of our students to take tests when they are unable to identify the problems which lie within our classrooms The state normally receives percentages or statistics on what the students are passing or failing they are not there to see what goes on with every individual Parents are the root of this perpetual problem Its inevitable Parents who do not encourage the English language are only disabling their child from their full potential How confident are you in your ability to close the achievement gap in your classroomI am of Hispanic origin and have two non- English speaking parents I was born and raised in Houston TX to two Central American parents They enrolled me into kindergarten with only knowledge of my native tongue Spanish I attended ESL classes until I was in 2ndgrade after
