In the article On the run Wanted Men in a Philadelphia Ghetto by Alice Goffman Alice shines the light on the surveillance and policing in the black neighborhoods in Philadelphia and how their daily lives are affected Goffmans intent in this article is to show thatwe know little about how daily life within these neighborhoods is affected Goffman 2009 p339 Throughout the article she indicates how the surveillance in the black neighborhoods can affect a black person and the people around him greatly but she does not state many questions at all The surveillance of the black communities allows people to break the laws making citizens have self surveillance almost impossible This effects the failure of young black males in the community from not getting a job to living in fear of getting imprisoned againGoffman gives some theories on the ghetto and how she disagrees with Foucaults theory Rather than encouraging self surveillance the forms of supervision and policing found in the neighborhood I observed foster a climate of fear and suspicion in which people are pressured to inform on one another Goffman 2009 p341 Goffmans article focuses mainly on the young uneducated black males she observed over the years and how they try to avoid getting arrested again There are many other ghettos out in the country other than Philadelphia just focusing on one race theory and place will give some information but not all of it Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in the article Quantitative methods were mostly composed of percentages such as the amount of black males being incarcerated Pettit and Western 2004 states 30 percent of those with only high school diplomas have been to prison and 60 percent of those who did not finish high school have prison records by their mid-30s Coffman 2009 p339 The article was mostly composed of qualitative methods such as observations Goffman had a conversation with one of the black males
