Medical Mistreatment and Victimization Its Time to Make a Change In December of 1983my mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer The suspicion of cancer initiated with a routine Pap smear by our family doctor and she was directed to a gynecologist Under local anesthesia he performed a biopsy which in fact detected cancerous cells in her cervix It was unclear whether or not it had spread beyond the cervix so my mother was recommended a radical hysterectomy as an assessment for how far the cancer had actually traveled and to prevent further spreading She was given an option between two surgeons in Colorado where we were resided at the time one about an hour and a half away in Denver or one at out local hospital in Longmont She decided for convenience reasons to go ahead with the surgery in Longmont after discussing the procedure with the OBGYN surgeon Dr John McCauley who told her that he had successfully performed the same operation in the past Cervical cancer follows a specific course It goes from the cervix to the lymph nodes so the surgery began at the top of the abdominal lymph system and each one was removed and tested as the surgery progressed She was informed that if they found cancer in any one of the lymph nodes they would terminate the surgery and the treatment would be radiation therapy The actual surgery was predicted to last five hours After twelve hours a blood loss of six units due to accidental artery incision and severed sensory nerves in her ureter causing a permanent loss of bladder control she was transferred to the intensive care unit where she remained for the next four days A few days after the surgery doctor came in to inform her that the test results had shown that there was in fact no detection of cancer anywhere including her cervix While he was enthusiastic about this great news my
