"I agree that reading interpretation is a great way to see new angles and layers of a text! Your final paragraph where you explain this really clarifies the purpose of this essay for me. I think a simple fix can anticipate reader confusion: proper title formatting in the opening sentence (and subsequent mentions of the titles), something that not only helps with clarity but enhances ethos.
As possible, you can push this essay beyond summarizing Murphy's article by giving an example of what you describe in your last sentence, or by demonstrating some similar application of Murphy's approach or analysis. Shifting the balance of your body paragraphs away from the very long direct quotations can also do this; are each of those needed in full? If not, consider revising, using paraphrase or summary, or similar that can assert your control and guiding hand as the writer and rhetor of the piece, which includes your position as the "researcher" who engages with Murphy's article (and Cather's text) and evaluates it for the reader."
