America is a nation of immigrants a melting pot that has drawn on the cultures and experiences of nations from all over the world since its inception That tradition continues today and people continue to come to the United States to begin anew However immigration today is very different The number of immigrants today can only be conjectured because the majority of people entering the country do so illegally This change in immigration has affected every facet of our society in ways big and smallIllegal immigration has brought about a subtle change in the American job market Since illegal immigrants are undocumented it is illegal to hire them However they are also willing to work for next to nothing compared to American standards of pay Their acceptance of low wages makes illegal immigrants very attractive to companies who often hire them for the lowest and dirtiest jobs available and pay them extremely low wages Paying the immigrants less saves the employers money but it also artificially depresses wages in already low-paying areas of the economy This effect creates a vicious circle many Americans do not want to do these jobs at such low wages which in turn increases the sentiment that illegal immigrants do jobs that Americans refuse to do Wagner Supporters of illegal immigrants often trumpet the idea that illegal immigrants fill a vital segment of the economy but in reality the very presence of illegal immigrants in the job market has changed the working climate of those jobs Americans used to work as plumbers construction workers painters and farm workers these jobs were considered respectable and middle-class As illegal immigrants have filled these areas wages have gone down This result in turn has created the idea that such jobs are below the dignity of most Americans Since most illegal immigrants are paid cash under the table they pay no
