The American-Mexican war lasted from April 25 1846 and continued until September 14 1847 Throughout these years troops form each side were engaged in numerous battles like the Battle of Palo Alto the Battle of Monterrey and the Battle of Chapultepec The Battle of Palo Alto which is said to be the first major clash in the way started on May 8 1846 to the north of Brownsville Texas Mexican General Mariano Arista prepared The Army of the North composed of a four-thousand men force one-thousand over the army of American General Zachary Taylor with three-thousand troops While the Mexican General established his army in The Mexican City of Matamoros the US General settled Fort Texas right across at The Rio Grande as well as a supply base Fort Polk at Point Isabel about forty miles away on the Coast Mariano Arista laid siege to Fort Texas knowing that Zachary Taylor would have to come and break the siege Taylor managed to slip past this trap and made it to Fort Isabel where he gathered supplies for his troops They later intersected at the scrubby crossroads of Palo Alto where the development and superiority of the American weapons like the cannon and the new Flying Artillery defeated the Mexicans After hours of battle Marino Arista decided to order his troops out of action and moved to a defensive position at Resaca de la Palma Nevertheless he lost about four-hundred men double the number of American losses During The Battle of Monterrey General Taylor continued on with his troops to defeat the Mexican armies Although the captured of the city occurred on September 25 1846 they spent a week maneuvering and house-fighting in order to put an end to it It started on the 19th when Taylor positioned himself north of the city and captured the road leading to Saltillo the next day Because of this the Mexican army of five-thousand men led by
