Situations are not always what they appear to be In the play Othello by William Shakespeare Iago appears to be a friend to Othello Roderigo and Cassio however in reality he is manipulating them in order to obtain the position of lieutenant Iago manipulates Othello in order to be appointed lieutenant He also uses Roderigo to obtain money and to help him murder Cassio Meanwhile Iago is also manipulating Michael Cassio in order to obtain Cassios position of power In order to become lieutenant Iago manipulates the man who can appoint him to that position Othello Iago appears to be Othellos friend however he is simply gaining Othellos trust in order to manipulate him into giving Iago the position he desires Iago falsely accuses the current lieutenant that he is sleeping with Othellos wife Iago starts accusing Cassio of sleeping with Desdemona Othellos wife and advises him to beware of the green eyed monster 32165-166 Iago is fully aware that Cassio is not sleeping with Desdemona he simply wants to create a situation in which Othello will become jealous thus making him angry with Michael Cassio Othello trusts Iago and came to him for proof that his wife is disloyal Iago presents Desdemonas handkerchief as evidence of her and Cassio disloyalty however in reality Iago has manipulated the situation to further create tension between Othello and Cassio Iago tells Othello that he has seen Cassio wipe his beard with the handkerchief 33337-339 Iago is creating another instance of manipulation in reality his wife Emilia found the handkerchief and gave it to Iago he plants the evidence with Cassio and informs Othello that he has position of it in order to get Othello angry and give him the position of lieutenant Iago manipulates Othello he got him to believe his wife is having an affair However Iago needs help manipulating Othello he manipulates Roderigo to receive that necessary help Iago appears to be a friend to
