The assassination of Abraham Lincoln John Wilkes Booth was an actor who performed in plays throughout the country He was a racist and went along with the south during the Civil war He didnt like Abraham Lincoln who had represented everything he was against Booth also blamed the president for all the Souths problems He wanted to seek revenge During the summer of 1864 he had begun a series of plans to kidnap Lincoln It contributed to taking the president back to Richmond He then had organized a group of co-conspirators in 1865 This group of people included Samuel Arnold Michael OLaughlen John Surratt Lewis Powell George Atzerodt and David Herold The men first started meeting in Maryland and Washington The first attempt to capture Lincoln was on March 17 1865 This first attempt was scheduled when Lincoln had plans to attend a play at a hospital in Washington Then President Lincoln changed his plans and decided to stay in the capital His plan had failed Lincoln then gave a speech outside the White House Lincoln had stated in his speech the rights to vote be granted to certain blacks Booth was present for the speech behind the crowd gathered to hear His plans now were turned directly to assassination On Friday April 14 1865 Booth was sitting on the stairs of Fords Theatre and had heard that the president was attending later that night He then scheduled his final meeting with the men from the group He stated that he would like to kill the president at the theater He then wanted the men to kill certain people in the government He was hoping that these kinds of attacks would send chaos into the government and this would help the south for a comeback The presidential party had arrived at Fords Booth was armed with a shot derringer and a Knife for hunting He went slowly toward the box where the president and aquantinces
