Out of all the battles Gettysburg was the one who turned the whole Civil War around It started on July 1st through the 3rd in 1863 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania Robert E Lee led the South while George Meade led the North Robert E Lee had had success in Chancellorsville so he led his men to the Shenandoah Valley to invade the North Lieutenant Marcellus Jones was the man who fired the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg Many people say that Gettysburg was a very important battle in the Civil War So what were some of these reasonsOn July 2nd 1863 a battle between the North and the South took place on a hill called Little Round Top General George Meade told General Sickles to defend the southern side of Cemetery Ridge but he did not obey This left Little Round Top wide open to the Confederates Meade heard about the lack of protection Sickles left on Cemetery Ridge so he sent General Gouverneur K Warren to defend the hole he left open He noticed that the Confederates were near and he requested help to defend their side Joshua Chamberlain from the Union side was holding a line of men near Little Round Top The Confederates came in and attacked the Unions left flank but Chamberlain help it for two charges After these two charges his men were running low on supply His only choice was to tell them to use their bayonets They set them up and started to charge at the final wave of Confederates They charged in the shape of a V so that the Confederates were surrounded As soon as the Confederates saw them coming they didnt know how to react So their only choice was to retreat from Little Round Top As they were retreating some of Chamberlains men were hiding behind trees and they started firing This led to the securing of Little Round Top for the Union
