The Industrial Revolution and British Society What problems and what benefits did the Industrial Revolution bring to British society Were the people better or worse off with the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution refers to the changes in methods of production and the resulting tremendous increase in the production of goods which took place in Britain between about 1750 and 1870 The improved production methods made a greater range or products available to the people at cheaper prices The population of industrial cities grew and this created more communication of ideas These were positive effects as well as the important reforms made in education and health and working conditions in factories as a result of the Industrial Revolution The reforms helped improve living standards as a large number of people lived in reasonable comfort It is certain that the impact of the changes that occurred were different for people of different classes and geography As a whole the benefits outweighed the problems of the Industrial Revolution The increased production allowed for a greater variety of products to choose from It was also cheaper to buy the mass-produced goods This mass production was done in factories Britain was transformed from a rural to an urban civilization as factories drew formerly farmers together to one spot for the purpose of production This is called urbanization A person was no longer dependent on only their own resources as a farmer Jobs were much simpler with specialization of labour They had only to concentrate on one specific task as a worker in a factory The threat of starvation was small which as a farmer had never been far away if a harvest failed Also bringing people together who had been traditionally isolated and disunited increased political awareness and activity among the masses The new industrial classes began gradually to weaken the power of the landed aristocracy Human labour became an important and valued resource
